Компания была основана в 1911 году отцом компании General Motors Уильямом Дюрантом. В то время он отошел от управления GM и активно занимался организацией новых автокомпаний. Уходя из General Motors, Дюрант забрал с собой проект интересной модели и вместе со знаменитым гонщиком Луи Шевроле (в честь которого и названа компания) произвел инженерную доработку. В 1912 году была представлена первая модель - Classic Six - просторный пятиместный турер с электрическим освещением, четырьмя дверьми и складным верхом.

Знаменитый логотип Chevrolet – галстук-бабочка – возник в 1914 году вместе с одной из моделей и остается неизменным до сих пор.
